Design Notes
This book is a good example of what can happen if a book designer is not hired before illustration begins. The artwork was not the correct size for the book’s intended trim size. So we had to go with a much smaller landscape format, and laid the book out so that the illustration was on one side of each spread, and the text was on the other. I then added bicycle tire tracks to frame the text, which tied it in nicely with the theme of the book. That look was continued in the title on the cover. Overall, I was very pleased with the finished product!
Book Description
My Journey with Jimmy is a lighthearted story for early readers about friendship. The main voice of the story is a Hispanic female and the subject of the story is a African American boy named Jimmy. The girl talks about how kind and helpful Jimmy has been to her and others in their city. She also mentions how she values Jimmy as a person, because of his servant hood. Jimmy grows up to be a police officer and the story ends with the girl becoming a police officer too. My Journey with Jimmy is a great story to begin the discussion of diversity and/or respect for the police with younger kids. With the current string of events in America, it’s important that we move in the direction of changing the narrative about race and the police.
