Welcome to the Self Publishing by Design series!

As a book designer of over a decade, fellow author, former magazine managing editor, and former bookstore manager, I've been around the block! One thing I've learned in publishing is that the design of your book has an intimate relationship with every phase of the publishing journey. That's why, in conjunction with the Crowdfunding campaign for my latest book Never Ever Build a Blanket Fort!, I wanted to have conversations with some of the "champions" in the self-publishing industry about the whole process and how it relates to design!

The Full Schedule:

  • BOOK COVERS by Design • April 21st @ 2pm EST: A conversation with fellow designers and authors Clay Anderson and Katie Weaver about what makes a great book cover.

  • EDITED by Design • April 26th @ 2pm EST: A conversation with mother and daughter editing duo Robin Katz and Nikki Filippone on the relationship between editing and design.

  • ILLUSTRATED by Design • April 28th @ 2pm EST: A conversation with illustrator Lee Dixon about his process, the artwork for Never ever Build a Blanket Fort!, and looking ahead.

  • PRINTED by Design • May 3rd @ 1pm EST: A conversation with Edita Ramoniene about various printing options available for traditionally-printed children’s books, and the state of the printing industry today.
  • CROWDFUNDED by Design: A conversation with author and crowdfunding expert Lisa Ferland about the best practices for successfully funding your next book.

We'll also be having giveaways during several (if not all) of these events. So be sure to register below for each of the five events and join us! Replays will be available for a limited time.

children's picture book mockup of Never Ever Build a Blanket Fort. A boy wielding a wooden sword and a girl holding a wooden spoon stand in front of a purple blanket fort with stuffed elephant, bear, and giraffe behind it casting large shadows on the wall. The shadows show that the stuffed animals are also holding weapons. The book title is in brush font across the shadows.
